How to Cure Sport or Work Injury with Physiotherapy?
Injuries related to sport and work are, sadly, common. During a single year, more than 17,600 Canadians were hospitalized with sports-related injuries, the majority of which were due to cycling incidents.
And workplace injuries accounted for more than 251,600 lost-time claims in 2017 (a substantial increase on the previous two years).
Injuries can stop you going to work, caring for your loved ones, socializing, and taking part in the sports that mean so much to you (and your health). If left untreated, these injuries can lead to ongoing physical issues and complications that cause further disruption.
That’s why it’s so important to treat them and get back on track as quickly as you can. Physiotherapy is a popular treatment for sports and work injuries, but how does it work, and why is it so effective?
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy (also known as physical therapy) is a form of treatment focusing on various physical injuries and conditions.
Physiotherapists can help with issues related to the entire body and its functions, from the bones and soft tissue to circulation. They can play a part in enhancing your physical activity, treating injuries, and helping to prevent others in the future.
Some injuries may be easier to treat than others. For example, if you sprain your ankle severely while playing basketball, a physiotherapist will be able to aid with swelling and tenderness.
Or if you fall off your bike while cycling on concrete, a physiotherapist will focus on helping you recover and avoiding subsequent injuries.
Other injuries demanding a physiotherapist’s attention might develop over time. For example, people who work in environments where heavy lifting is required frequently (warehouses, factories, etc.) may experience extreme discomfort with sprains or pulled muscles.
You could be referred to a physiotherapist by a doctor in some cases, though that’s not necessary most of the time.
How will my physiotherapist assess my injury?
A qualified physiotherapist will take the time to assess your injuries and identify the proper treatment to cultivate your recovery. This is essential to make sure every minute they spend with you is valuable and helps you get where you need to be.
They will start by analyzing your history and your current condition carefully. A good physiotherapist has to understand how you became injured, how it affects you physically and mentally, and anything else they feel is relevant.
You should feel comfortable speaking with your physiotherapist and providing them with the information they need. The more they know, the better they can identify the right treatment for your unique situation.
Next, your physiotherapist will perform a number of physical examinations to assess your flexibility and range of motion, though the extent of movement you’re capable of could be extremely limited depending on the specifics of your injury.
Your physiotherapist will take their findings and build a custom treatment plan to help you recover in the safest, most efficient, and most comfortable way.
How will my physiotherapist treat my injury?
Your physiotherapist will treat your injury in the way they consider the most effective, based on their training and their professional & personal experience. Physiotherapists can treat injuries, relieve pain, and encourage recovery in a variety of ways.
Other treatments can be performed when necessary and appropriate. Our registered physiotherapists will discuss any treatments they consider to be in your best interests and ensure you feel comfortable with the work involved.
This will bring you the peace of mind you need to trust your physiotherapist and follow any guidance they offer related to pain medication, independent exercises, and more.
Your Astra Medi Spa physiotherapist treatments will be tailored to your work or sports injury, recovery goals, and other crucial factors. They will be performed in a welcoming, comfortable environment in which staff adhere to all Covid-19 regulations to maintain personal safety.
What physiotherapy treatments are available at Astra Medi Spa?
At Astra Medi Spa, we’re proud to embrace both traditional and cutting-edge techniques in our physiotherapy treatments.
During this innovative treatment, a specialist device is used to apply acoustic energy to the injury area(s) of your body. These are mechanical, not electrical, and aim to boost blood flow.
Shockwave therapy can alleviate pain immediately and encourage better circulation, helping to accelerate the healing process.
This has become an increasingly popular physical therapy technique. Your physiotherapist will apply suction cups to injured areas of the body, which lift the targeted tissues. This process creates space within those tissue layers, helping to relieve tightness, stimulate better circulation, and alleviate pain.
We also offer lymphedema therapy, pelvic health therapy, and kego exercise treatments.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need to treat my injuries?
The number of treatment sessions required depends on the type of sports or workplace injury you experience, the severity of its physical impact, the techniques required, your physical condition, and more.
Our physiotherapists will perform a comprehensive assessment of your injury and your history to determine the best treatment for you. They will provide you with a clear plan and arrange your appointments to ensure you understand your road to recovery.
Physiotherapy can help to cure your sport or work injury over time, through one or more techniques. Astra Medi Spa’s registered physiotherapists offer a number of treatments to suit different injuries occurring in any workplace, on any playing field.

How Does the Perfect Derma Peel Revitalize Your Skin?
The Perfect Derma Peel has become a popular cosmetic treatment for men and women looking to revitalize their looks — and with good reason.
It’s a simple treatment with the power to combat acne scars, signs of sun damage, wrinkles, and other common skin-related issues. And the Perfect Derma Peel can even brighten the skin to create a fresher, lighter complexion unlike any you’ve had before.
If you’re thinking about trying a face peel for the first time, you’re bound to have questions. What ingredients does the Perfect Derma Peel contain? And what does it actually do to your skin?
In this post, we’ll answer both these and other questions to help you make an informed choice.
What’s in the Perfect Derma Peel?
The Perfect Derma Peel is known as the only medical-grade peel to include glutathione as one of its core ingredients. As you may or may not know, glutathione is a powerful peptide typically utilized for its brightening capabilities and to reduce inflammatory reactions within cells.
Glutathione penetrates skin deeply to reduce the presence of wrinkles and oxidant damage. It also can turn dark skin pigmentation (known as pheomelanin) into light pigmentation, ideal if you’re affected by hyperpigmentation. This condition is caused by a rise in melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of your hair, eyes, and (of course) skin.
Astra Medi Spa also offers a Glutathione IV treatment, which can be combined with the Perfect Derma Peel to maximize the results. We’ll come back to this later.
Other key ingredients in the Perfect Derma Peel include:
Vitamin C plays a big part in helping the skin’s natural regenerative capabilities and repairing damaged cells. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is known for its anti-aging effects, as is retinoic acid, and both can reduce the visibility of wrinkles/fine lines.
The Perfect Derma Peels other ingredients are included to help address other skin problems, such as scarring and/or hyperpigmentation. The main reason the phenol is present in the formulation is its ability to numb the skin slightly, which helps patients to stay comfortable during the Perfect Derma Peel treatment.
The peel is administered by a member of our expert team with the training and experience to provide you with total peace of mind from start to finish.
What Does the Perfect Derma Peel Do to Your Skin?
We’ve covered the Perfect Derma Peel’s ingredients and the reasons they’re included. But how does the peel actually work with your skin to achieve its amazing results?
Applying the Perfect Derma Peel
Undergoing the Perfect Derma Peel is a fairly long process, though the peel can be applied to the entire face in only 15 minutes (exact timing may vary from one case to another).
This is a safe treatment, and you’ll be invited to discuss any concerns or ask any questions you may have before it starts. We want you to feel relaxed and aware of each step of the process.
Once the peel is applied to your face, you’ll leave it on for around six hours. Yes, that might seem like a particularly long time, but the peel has to remove the skin’s outer layer (the epidermis) to reveal the fresh layer underneath.
First-timers might find this description gruesome, but it’s generally a comfortable experience leading to incredible results. Again, the phenol in the Perfect Derma Peel formula helps to minimize any potential discomfort. Some mild tingling may accompany the early stage of the process, once the peel has been applied to the face.
The peeling and rejuvenation process
After the application, you’ll be provided with a care kit to take home with you. This includes a moisturizer and towelettes to help ease any itching, tightness, or redness that could occur once the skin is ready to start peeling away.
The epidermis will begin to peel across the following three or four days, and the skin will become resurfaced gradually across a variable period (usually one week to ten days). It’s crucial that you avoid trying to pick the skin as it’s being shed, as hard as that can be.
Many of us have experienced peeling skin at one time or another, typically as the result of sunburn, and it can be satisfying. But make sure you leave the skin alone as it peels, without sloughing or pulling at it (even gently).
This treatment is designed to be safe and effective on all types of skin, creating noticable results that last. You can follow your usual routine after the treatment and while the skin is peeling, though it’s best to avoid any activities that could cause you to sweat excessively.
That means no strenuous exercise, and you should try to keep cool if you undergo the treatment during summer.
Multiple treatments will be required to maintain the results. We recommend three spaced every four weeks apart (or longer, if necessary) initially, for the best outcome. After this, one peel every four or five months should help to combat the signs of aging and the effects of environmental damage.
Complementary Treatments to Maximize Your Perfect Derma Peel Results
We recommend combining the Perfect Derma Peel with our Glutathione IV and Vitamin C IV treatments to maximize the results.
The Glutathione IV treatment encourages the skin to become healthier and lighter, easing uneven skin tones and hyperpigmentation resulting from excessive exposure to UV rays or hormonal changes.
As vitamin C aids the body’s healing capabilities, it can help to promote the skin’s rejuvenation during the peeling process.
The body is unable to produce vitamin C on its own, but our intravenous treatment delivers it into the bloodstream directly. This enables the vitamin C to bypass the digestive process, so your body can absorb more of it.
Our experts have also put together some top tips to help you care for your skin after your Perfect Derma Peel.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month: A Guide to Symptoms and Treatment
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to show support for anyone affected by breast cancer and to raise awareness of the work being done to aid treatment.
Here in Canada, it’s believed that around 26,900 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. It accounts for approximately 25 percent of new cancer cases, and 13 percent of all cancer-related deaths among Canadian women.
It’s crucial that every woman knows the warning signs of breast cancer, and understands what treatment options are available. We’ll cover both, and more, below.
Breast Cancer Symptoms
The most common warning signs of breast cancer include:
One or more of these signs may indicate the presence of breast cancer. But they could be related to other conditions and do not necessarily mean that a woman has developed cancer.
Remember: there is no ‘typical’ breast. What has always been normal for you might be considerably different to another woman’s standard of normal. Your breasts may start to look and/or feel slightly different due to a number of factors, e.g. changes to your weight (gaining or losing), giving birth, and even taking specific types of medication.
Breast lumps are often caused by non-cancerous conditions, e.g. fibrocystic breast disease. This is a noncancerous condition that causes the breasts to become lumpy. However, even though fibrocystic breast disease isn’t harmful, it can still cause some discomfort.
If you start to notice one or more of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately. It can be terrifying to speak to a medical professional about such a life-changing condition. But it’s best to make an appointment as soon as you can, even if just to set your mind at ease.
Breast Cancer Risk Factors
Research has shown that a number of combined factors can increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. These include:
The following are also risk factors, but can be changed:
Breast Cancer Treatments
A number of treatment options are available to women affected by breast cancer. Specific treatments may be recommended depending on the stage to which the cancer has developed, and more than one type of treatment could be offered.
Breast cancer surgery is an invasive treatment in which the cancerous tissue will be removed.
While surgical breast cancer treatment may involve removing just part of the tissue, a mastectomy is full removal of the breast. Women who believe they may be at higher risk of cancer (due to their family history) may elect to undergo a mastectomy before any symptoms develop.
Hormonal therapy involves preventing the cancerous cells from receiving the hormones required to grow.
This is one of the most well-known treatment options for breast cancer. This revolves around administering medicines designed to reduce and ultimately kill cancer cells in the body.
Chemotherapy may be administered intravenously through a drip, in pill form, or even both in some cases.
High-energy rays (similar to those used in X-rays) are applied to the breast(s), with an aim to destroy the cancer cells.
This treatment option is designed to work with the immune system to combat the cancer, or to control the side effects from alternative treatments for cancer.
Life after breast cancer treatment
All breast cancer treatments can have a traumatic effect on the body, but may help to destroy the cancer cells successfully.
For women who have undergone a unilateral or bilateral mastectomy, adjusting to the breasts’ new form can be extremely difficult. Breast reconstruction is one option, in which a cosmetic surgeon utilizes an artificial implant and/or tissue from another area of the body to create new breasts with natural results.
Alternatively, some women may choose to wear a mastectomy bra. These feature fabric pockets within the cups, designed to hold a prosthesis securely in place. For women who have undergone a mastectomy, Astra Medi Spa offers custom mastectomy bra fittings in conjunction with Amoena.
To learn more about a custom bra fitting for yourself or a loved one, please contact our team.
The fall season is here, which means everyone who spent a little too much time in the sun this summer may benefit from a peel to give their skin a younger, refreshed look.
Medium depth chemical peels like The Perfect Derma Peel provide deep exfoliation to reveal healthier, clearer skin underneath, but its up to you to maintain those results. To help you do just that, we’ve put together a handy guide of tips and daily habits that will help extend your peel benefits as long as possible between peel treatments.
Note: These tips are suggestions to help you get the most out of your chemical peel, but are not meant to replace instructions during your treatment. Please follow your doctor’s individualized instructions
These post-peel tips can be implemented once your skin is completely healed.
1. Use the right home care products for your skin: If you’ve been getting by with using just any facial cleanser you find at the end of the beauty aisle, it may be time to upgrade your skin care products. Make sure you pick up a gentle, thorough cleanser without harsh chemicals to keep your skin free from impurities to prevent breakouts, blemishes and clogging of pores. Don’t let the fresh skin look like your old skin!
2. Daily Sun Protection: After a peel, you have fresh, beautiful and sensitive skin exposed and easily susceptible to damage. Avoid and minimize sun exposure, and wear sunscreen no matter what – whether it’s rainy or sunny, your skin needs protection! Those UVA and UVB rays can creep up on you when you least expect it.
Bonus: Cover up with a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses for extra protection.
3. Continue addressing the skin issues you got the peel for in the first place: Did you peel to correct hyper-pigmentation? Try The Perfect Bleaching Cream (https://www.theperfectdermapeel.com/product/the-perfect-bleaching-cream/) Was your primary goal to even skin tone and texture? Ask your doctor if The Perfect A can be added to your regimen (https://www.theperfectdermapeel.com/product/the-perfect-a-cream/).
Are you hoping to see brighter, more youthful skin? The Perfect C (https://www.theperfectdermapeel.com/product/15718/) is exactly what you need! The entire Perfect Skin Care line was formulated to work with The Perfect Derma Peel, so ask your doctor to help you choose the correct products to amplify your results based on your specific skin goals.
4. Keep your new skin glowing! Exfoliation is one of the easiest ways to keep your post-peel skin in good shape. Of course, this step should occur after you have recovered from your peel and never while peeling. There are several ways you can do this, including a mask, a light facial scrub or deep cleaning with a skincare brush such as the Clarisonic (http://www.clarisonic.com/). Pick whichever way works best for you, as long as you exfoliate at least once a week, as it helps contribute to cell turnover to minimize imperfections. By lightly exfoliating the top layer of skin, you’re removing dead skin cells which can inhibit proper absorption of skincare products. Properly exfoliated skin looks brighter, smoother and more hydrated.
5. Golden Rules for healthy skin: Don’t forget the golden rules of skin care: a good diet, plenty of water, exercise and proper daily care.
6. Peel, Maintain & Repeat: Schedule another peel! Luckily, medium depth peels can be applied monthly for several months if needed, and then repeated every 3 – 6 months for significant improvement for common issues like chronic acne, acne scars and melasma.
7. Visit your dermatologist: Only your doctor or medical skin care professional can give you personalized advice to help achieve your skin goals. See what your dermatologist recommends for your skin, and check in at least once a year to address any changes.

What I Wish I Knew About PRP Treatment
In the past few years, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has become a popular treatment for combating the signs of aging. It’s a non-surgical option that utilizes cutting-edge technology and techniques to create visible improvements in the skin.
But what is PRP, how does it work, and what results can you expect? These are questions people may wish they’d asked before trying this state-of-the-art treatment — so we’ll answer them for you in this post.
How PRP treatment works
Platelet Rich Plasma treatment is designed to help your body repair damage using its own substances — specifically, the blood.
The plasma within your blood is made up of platelets, rich in growth factors. Plasma itself consists of glucose, clotting factors, proteins, and hormones.
PRP involves taking a sample of blood from your arm as you would for any standard blood test, and separating the platelets in a centrifuge. This spins the blood at very high speeds to cause the platelets to shift away from each other.
The separated plasma is removed and prepared to be injected back into the body, in one or more target areas. As the plasma releases growth factors, it stimulates and boosts the number of cells performing repairs within your skin.
As a result, PRP treatment can lead to enhanced elastic and collagen production — making your skin more elastic, firmer, and youthful. That’s why it’s used commonly to:
PRP treatment is commonly used to enhance the appearance of the skin on the face, hands, and neck. However, it suits other needs, too:
What should you expect during your PRP treatment?
First and foremost, there’s no need to worry about discomfort during PRP therapy — there’s little to none. This is a simple procedure based around injections, and we use the safest, latest equipment for your total peace of mind.
The risks of experiencing any side effects as a result of your PRP therapy are incredibly slim, but we want you to be aware regardless. As PRP is an autologous treatment (relying on substances taken from you directly), the danger of experiencing an allergic reaction as you might from certain other medications is significantly reduced.
Other side effects may include:
Again, you’re unlikely to be affected by any of these, but we want to draw your attention to these potential side effects and help you make an informed decision.
What will happen before my PRP treatment?
It’s crucial that you know exactly how your PRP therapy will unfold, from the moment you step into the treatment room to the moment you leave. We’ll discuss the process with you at length during your consultation, and determine whether PRP therapy is the right option for you based on your goals, health status, etc.
However, typical recommendations for anyone preparing to undergo our PRP therapy include:
Certain recommendations may vary from one case to another, but generally, we advise you to follow the steps discussed above.
How long will my PRP treatment take?
Your PRP therapy session should take no longer than an hour and a half, though it may run longer or shorter (so allow at least a couple of hours, just in case).
Typically, it takes around half an hour to take a sample of your blood and process the platelets, preparing them to be reinjected into your system. Another half hour or so may be required to inject them and bring the treatment to a close, though it could take less time than this.
We’ll be able to offer a more accurate timeframe during your consultation, but use the above as an approximate guideline when planning your schedule.
What happens after my PRP procedure?
The average recovery time after a Platelet Rich Plasma injection tends to fall within three or four hours, but it could vary from case to case. You may experience some swelling, tenderness, or bruising shortly after the injections, though they will pass fairly quickly.
If you want to minimize any swelling or bruising that might occur, apply cold packs to the treatment areas gently. Avoid washing these areas for at least 24 hours, and stay out of direct sunlight. Skip hot showers and baths, too.
You should allow the treatment area(s) to rest and recover immediately after your PRP therapy. You will likely be able to continue with your usual or planned activities following your session, such as going back to work (unless you have a physically-exerting job) or shopping.
Over the following weeks, you should notice positive changes to the skin in the treated areas. This may include tighter skin, less-visible wrinkles, and a better appearance overall.
We’ll provide you with any further advice on the day of your treatment, and will be available to answer any questions you may have.
That brings our post on what you need to know about PRP treatment before you try it for yourself to a close. We hope it answers all of your questions, but if not, you know where to find us.

Can Glutathione IV Help Brighten Your Skin?
Glutathione IV treatments make it easier than ever to get beautiful skin, with a series of simple sessions revitalizing your skin tone, enhancing your complexion, and creating a healthier glow.
But how do glutathione treatments work, and what changes can you expect to see?
How does our Glutathione IV treatment work?
Our glutathione IV treatment has been put together by our experts to brighten and lighten your skin through a straightforward intravenous injection. Glutathione is an antioxidant that occurs naturally in the human body, working to inhibit melanin production.
What is melanin? It’s a substance responsible for skin pigmentation, produced by melanocytes. We all have an equal number of melanocytes in our bodies, but some of us tend to produce more of it than others, contributing to the appearance of your skin and hair.
So, reducing the amount of pigmentation your system creates can have a dramatic impact on the tone of your skin. You may be able to stop using foundation and other cosmetic products to create an artificial harmony in your skin tone, cutting valuable time off your makeup routine first thing in the morning.
But your skin tone may be the result of genetics and environmental factors (depending on your lifestyle). If you spend too long in the sun, for example, you may experience hyperpigmentation: the formation of unwanted patches of brown skin or freckles on the face or other areas of the body.
While hyperpigmentation can be caused by too much sun exposure, it may be the result of other factors, such as hormonal changes, skin injuries, inflammation, or age.
This can be a difficult condition to live with, particularly in extreme cases. That’s just another reason why it’s so important to care for your skin and take precautions in bright weather (even if you only get outside for less than two hours a week, as 60 percent of Canadians do).
The glutathione IV treatment feeds this substance directly into the body to inhibit melanin production, leading to noticeable results after multiple sessions. But the number of treatments required varies depending on your skin tone, your complexion, your melanin production, and the goals you want to achieve.
Not sure what you’re looking for? Don’t worry — our team has the experience, the training, and the skills to help you make the right decision.
What results does Astra Medi Spa’s Glutathione IV treatment offer?
Astra Medi Spa’s glutathione IV treatment is designed to leave your skin brighter and lighter. This can give you a real boost if you’re unhappy with your skin tone or other aspects of your appearance.
Our research shows that Glutathione IV treatments can:
Create a more even skin tone
If your skin tone is unbalanced (or at least seems that way to you), intravenous injections of glutathione could help to cultivate a more even complexion. As this involves introducing greater quantities of an organic substance into the body, the results will be natural and safe.
There’s no need to undergo any form of invasive surgery, and there’s definitely no downtime. You can have the treatment at any time and carry on with your day.
Reduce hyperpigmentation visibility
If you’re affected by hyperpigmentation, you may feel frustrated by the lack of balance in your skin tone, but glutathione can help to combat its effects.
Injecting glutathione into your bloodstream can inhibit melanin production and reduce the visibility of hyperpigmentation, cultivating a more even skin tone.
Enhance appearance of blemishes and freckles
If you’re naturally prone to freckles or skin blemishes, our glutathione IV treatment has the power to reduce their visibility.
Your skin may become clearer, brighter, and lighter, with a healthier appearance.
Decrease visibility of liver spots
Liver spots (AKA age spots) are caused by overactive pigment cells, as UV light increases the speed of melanin production.
People (particularly those with light skin) who spend a lot of time in the sun are more likely to develop liver spots over time, as their bodies start to produce melanin in higher concentrations, or it clumps together.
As glutathione inhibits melanin production, liver spots can become less visible with multiple treatments.
Why is the glutathione IV treatment so effective?
Our glutathione IV treatment is such an effective solution because it delivers a potent cocktail of glutathione and essential vitamins into your system, administered by a trained professional who knows exactly how to maximize your safety from the start of the session to the end.
Yes, you might be able to take supplements that contain vitamins and glutathione, but they’re not as effective. Why?
Because they have to be consumed orally and pass through the digestive process. They’ll be broken down on their journey, and their power will be compromised by your stomach acids. This means you might not receive the results you expect to see based on the supplements’ claims.
However, our treatment goes directly into your bloodstream and bypasses the difficulties associated with the digestive process — boosting its efficacy and bringing stronger results.
How many Glutathione IV treatment sessions do you need?
The number of treatments you need depends on the level of skin lightening you have in mind, your current complexion, and how quickly you want to start seeing results. For example, if you plan to go on vacation in six months or have a special occasion coming up, your skin lightening might seem a little more urgent.
In general, though, our experts recommend one session per week. This can help to generate noticeable results within a few months. For example, if your skin tone falls into the Fitzpatrick 4 area, you may notice a change in your skin tone within one to three months.
It may be a little longer for people in the Fitzpatrick skin tone 5 area, though, usually taking between four and six months.
Astra Medi Spa’s team can discuss your skin tone, your skin lightening goals, and recommend the right course of glutathione IV treatments for you. To book your expert consultation, get in touch today!
Here’s How a Laser can Help with Ingrown Hairs
Ingrown hairs are a common side effect of shaving and waxing, though they can develop on ungroomed areas of the body too. They form when hair grows back into the skin and appear as itchy red spots.
If you’ve experienced ingrown hairs, you’ll know how uncomfortable they can be. Fortunately, there are various ways to remove them and reduce the risk of further issues, but some are more effective than others.
One of the most powerful ways to deal with ingrown hairs is laser hair removal, but how does this actually work?
Destroying ingrown hairs with laser hair removal
Laser hair removal has become a common alternative to shaving, plucking, and waxing. It’s a faster, more effective, and more convenient way to achieve silky-smooth skin on one or more areas of the body.
During laser hair removal treatments, a technician will use a cutting-edge handheld device to target the laser at specific areas (legs, bikini line, back, etc.). The heat damages the hair follicles without affecting the surrounding skin.
Hairs become thinner during a course of treatments, and can eventually stop growing altogether.
When performed by a trained technician, laser hair removal is incredibly safe and effective. It can be used on any area of the body except the skin around the eyes.
If an ingrown hair becomes infected, seek treatment as soon as possible. Otherwise, it could become inflamed, cause much more pain than it has already, and even lead to abscesses.
How many laser treatments will I need to remove ingrown hairs?
One laser hair removal treatment is unlikely to be enough to destroy your ingrown hair and stop it coming back.
Patients typically undergo up to eight treatments, though this can vary from one case to another.
If you experience regular discomfort from ingrown hairs and want to try a longer-lasting alternative to traditional treatments, laser hair removal could be the solution you’re looking for.
How to prevent ingrown hairs
One of the most effective ways to deal with ingrown hairs? Be proactive and do what you can to prevent them in the first place!
Here are a few pro tips to try:
So, you can try several techniques to prevent ingrown hairs, but if you’re looking for a long-lasting, cutting-edge solution, laser hair removal is ideal.

Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin: Everything You Need to Know
Laser hair removal is a fantastic way to achieve silky-smooth skin, and it’s become a common alternative to shaving, waxing, or plucking.
Sadly, though, it hasn’t always been effective for everyone.
The nature of laser hair removal technology used to heighten the risk of burning, discoloration, and scarring in people with dark skin. But the cutting-edge devices available to technicians today means laser hair removal is safer for everyone than ever before.
How does it work?
Read on to discover everything you need to know about laser hair removal for dark skin.
Making laser hair removal safe for all skin colors
Traditionally, devices used in laser hair removal treatments were highly sensitive to both melanin and the patient’s skin color. People with pale skin and dark hair saw the best results, as the strong contrast makes it easier for the technology to separate the target hair from the skin surrounding it.
Technicians may have struggled to provide safe, effective laser hair removal for patients with dark skin and hair (as well as for those with pale skin and pale hair). For a long time, this denied people with dark skin the chance to enjoy a faster, longer-lasting hair-removal solution.
But now, patients of all skin colors can take advantage of the latest laser hair removal technologies, thanks to the Nd: YAG laser.
How Candela’s GentleMax Pro laser hair removal treatment works on dark skin
Candela’s GentleMax Pro Laser is designed to be safe for darker skin types, as it provides a selection of wavelengths: 1064 nm and 755 nm.
The 755 nm is best for skin types I - III, and the 1064 nm for skin types IV - IV.
The 1064 nm wavelength (AKA the Nd:YAG) is not absorbed by melanin as easily as other wavelengths. This means the laser deposits the energy deeper inside the skin and doesn’t depend on melanin.
And the GentleMax Pro Laser offers technicians a variety of pulse durations, which allows for more effective destruction of targeted follicles. It facilitates deeper penetration and powerful DCD cooling, which helps to protect the skin and make the entire process safer.
